Manchester University has been at the forefront of carbon fibre technology in recent years with products such as graphene that are already revolutionising component designs.
They have now turned their attention to the aesthetics of carbon. Alongside engineers from Hope Technology they have developed a new electrochromic resin that can be used in prepreg carbon fibre. As an electrical current is applied, the resin gradually takes on a new colour.
The engineers from Hope immediately saw the perfect application in their new carbon handle bars. Allowing customers to colour code the bars to their bikes colour scheme.
Initial designs will require a small battery to be installed into a specially adapted bar end plug, but it’s hoped that in the near future the control can be incorporated into electronic groupsets.
