Jamie Nicoll: Support your Local Good Times

07.08.2020

This is a great start your back yard backcountry adventure list and a time to explore our NZ wonderland in a more quiet state,
a time warp taking us back 20 or 30 years to before tourist numbers were so high, so take advantage of it I reckon, it’s amazing out there!

This is a get-away on bikes with hot pools and classic backcountry huts and the Hurunui definitely hits the mark of goodness here.

Any car will get you to Lake Talor and a mildly capable vehicle and some skill will get you to the locked gate at Loch Katrine

Pedal your way past Lake Sumner and up the Hurunui River valley to a choice huts and the hot pools. I had a wonderful stay
in Hurunui No.3 hut and definitely recommend heading that bit further to this one, its an old classic with beautiful backcountry charm!
If you head for this higher hut then I would recommend (although not essential, as I went up one way and down the other) to get wet
feet and cross the Hurunui river (if low/safe) and take advantage of the easy travel on the true left that follows the old 4wd farm track
to No.3 hut.

The hot pools are fantastic and marked with a small X on your topo map, roughly 5 KM upriver from Hurunui hut on the true right.
A pool situated halfway up a rock cascade overlooking the main river.

Be prepared in knowledge and practice like any good backcountry traveler as this is not a ride in your local trail park!
You’ll be rewarded in nature and proud of what we have!

Let me know how you get on!
